RUBBER TEST RESULTS A few years ago Mike Thomas published an article is SAM 86 on testing rubber using a formula he developed for his Casio programmable calculator. I used this method but would record the information in Excel so I had a permanent copy. This worked out well but when I obtained a Palm Top computer that had Excel built in I decided to create a spread sheet to do the whole job in one step. Using a calibrated torque meter and a accurate scale a value in ft.lbs/lb. of the rubber batch is calculated. The advantage of this method is that any sample motor can be evaluated as the formula takes into consideration the weight of the sample motor, turns and torque values. The sample motor is wound to maximum turns and torque. The number of turns, torque at maximum turns and sample weight are entered and a value relating to the number of winder cranks to back off at each reading is displayed. Unwind the motor to the next value and enter the torque. Repeat this until all of the torque readings are entered and the program will give the results.
